When I was a child, the Christmas season truly began with the celebration of St. Nicholas, whose visits were marked by a stocking full of toys and treats. My vision of this symbolic figure was of a generous, loving and caring old man, who served not only to bestow gifts upon good children everywhere, but to herald the joy and goodwill of the holiday. I was inspired by memories of this wonderful tradition and of the lasting image I have of St. Nicholas when I created this oil on canvas.
