PARRISH - PAINTS THE LAST WORK OF ART OF THE LAST MILLENNIUM AND THE FIRST WORK OF ART OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM. On December 31, 1999 at exactly 11:59:59 P.M. renowned artist Bradley J. Parrish completed the last painting of the 20th century. He immediately began the very first painting of the new millennium which was started at 12:00 A.M. on January 1, 2000. Parrish had planned a year in advance to be the first artist to paint the last painting of the last century and the first painting of the new century. Parrish pondered how to incorporate a whole century into one piece however, he felt that one could never encompass all the important and relevant issues into one body of work without leaving something out. The day before this was to take place Parrish opted to commemorate this event by doing a diptych, which is two oil paintings side by side, each measuring 11" high x 14" wide. The one on the left represents the old century and the one on the right represents the new century. Parrish describes this work as one that is more relevant to the mood of the most recent century. The painting on the left is more structured representing man's advancement from a more simplistic and primitive life in the beginning of the last millennium, to one of buildings and industry. One moves from left to right, as the movement in the painting begins to move you forward, catapulting you into the inevitable new millennium. In the piece representing the new millennium Parrish captures what he feels is a major thrust forward into a new and vast frontier. The right corners of the work representing the rest of the millennium which Parrish has left incomplete as the millennium has just begun and experiences are yet to come. In both pieces Parrish uses red to signify life and death. However, the true significance of the burst of red and intense yellows on the far right edge of the new millennium symbolize mans quest for love and happiness. At the edges of the gap between the old millennium and the new millennium Parrish gives us the height of excitement through the splash of paint, like fireworks or confetti in celebration of this monumental moment. Parrish's excitement in the concept of this piece was not to achieve an outright understanding of the piece but to leave it up to the viewer to interpret what the artist conveyed in this work. Parrish broke all records once again! He even broke his own long standing record from 1990 for raising the most money for public television. In 1990 Parrish amazed everyone when 100 reproductions of his "One Last Look" image with a donation value of $100 each was bringing in an average of $400.00 for each reproduction. Nine years later PBS Channel 10/36 of Milwaukee, the number one net revenue generating auction in the country, asked Parrish to work his magic once again in 1999. With last years auction falling far short of their goal, Bradley J. Parrish accepted their offer to be the Century Collection featured artist. He produced two limited edition wolf paintings and 150 reproductions reproduced from these works were sold on air. Aside from an original oil painting with an appraised value of $40,000.00 titled "Coming Home" Parrish also donated 10 original paper castings called "Snow Spirit" to be sold with the first 10 wolf prints of a second piece titled "The Sentinel". Consistently throughout the 9 day run of the on air auction, Parrish's works received major overbids. Many reaching 5 to 9 times their donor value. In fact, $920.00 was one of the highest bids for one of his reproductions. "Parrish's artwork was up against the world's greatest and most admired and collected artists including but not limited to Salvador Dali, Peter Max, Picasso, Norman Rockwell as well as acclaimed wildlife artists Robert Bateman, Carl Brenders and Bev Doolittle whose works consistently sold for much less than their donor value." Parrish also had an edition of 25 canvas transfers which also earned 5 times their donor value for the auction. All told, it is estimated Parrish has raised through the sales of his work over the 9 day auction well over $125,000. Surpassing his 1990 record by over twice the amount. This pushed this PBS station well over the one million dollar mark for the auction. In the 31 year history of the auction, no other artist, individual or company has earned this kind of dollar amount and will most likely will never be done in the near future. The top twenty bidders on the Parrish reproductions "The Sentinel" and "Coming Home" were invited to attend a reception with artist Bradley J. Parrish, for breakfast at the Timber Wolf Preservation Society where Parrish has studied and painted his wolves over the past ten years.
